Since India is already one of the most polluted countries in the world, an important question is: Will India ever be able to control pollution and, if so, when?

India’s pollution problem is reaching a catastrophic scale, the Indian government is still pursuing the transition to clean energy at only a snail’s pace. India has 22 out of the 30 most polluted cities in the world. New Delhi for the third consecutive year, is the world’s most polluted capital according to the ‘World Air Quality Report, 2020’.

Reasons for Increasing Pollution:

  • Increasing population is the first drastic cause for pollution in cities.
  • Increased use of vehicles for transporting and the toxic fuel produced by vehicles.
  • Poor drainage, unavailability of sanitation facilities, stagnated waters, uneven roads lead to health pollution.
  • Industries and chemical factories emit their waste in the form of poisonous gases and harmful waste water by chemical pollution, which spoils the river bodies and sea mammals.
  • Improper disposal of garbage from residential, commercial areas and hospitals posts threat to health pollution to the public.
  • Veg wastes from market, building wastes from construction sites add to the dirt and air pollution to the public.
  • Lastly e-wastes are generating heat and the chemicals from worn out parts of e-wastes are a threat to living people.

Preventive Measures for monitoring Pollution:

Develop Continues Air Quality monitoring Station in Cities:

Cities should focus to measurement of air quality is based on eight pollutants, namely Particulate Matter (size less than 10 µm) or (PM10), Particulate Matter (size less than 2.5 µm) or (PM2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Ozone (O3), Ammonia (NH3), Lead (Pb).

Management of construction Activities:
Pollution is an issue that the construction industry cannot ignore. The main types of pollution you need to be aware of are air, water and noise. Additionally, construction work may reveal existing subsurface pollution. In such situation, construction work is stopped and costly remediation is needed.
The construction industry must recognise the responsibility it has to monitor and limit the amount of pollution it collectively creates. One of the simplest measures you can take is to be conscious of how much waste and pollutants your work activities create and the consequences they have. Whether you are an employer or employee in the sector, there are strategies that reduce the amount of pollution produced that you can enforce and encourage others to do the same.

Encouraging uses of CNG & Electrical Vehicles
Our personal transportation choices have a huge impact on air quality. What we drive and how we drive impacts the environment. Motor vehicles give off more than half of all carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions in Air. These emissions, including microscopic particles, can contribute to breathing and heart problems along with an elevated risk of cancer.
Electric Vehicles seem to be the perfect future! Electric cars are growing in popularity every day. Just like conventional cars, there are certain benefits such as energy efficient, reduce emissions & lower maintenance cost. Research has shown that electric cars are better for the environment. They emit fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than petrol or diesel cars.

Reforestation
Going green means embracing a way of life that helps preserve the environment by reducing, reusing, and recycling items. For anyone who wants to play their part in protecting the environment, planting a tree is a great idea. They help to reduce pollution. They also help to clean the air that we breathe each day.
Trees help to combat global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide, removing and storing carbon while releasing oxygen back into the air.
They also reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves. It’s estimated that trees can reduce the temperature in a city by up to 7°C.
